Historic Barn on the Move

17 Aug 2009

After ten months of design and negotiation with Sevenoaks District Council, Planning Permission and Listed Building Consent has been secured to move a listed timber framed barn to enable its‘ conversion into a house.

This unusual proposal involved a Grade II listed structure which was in a deteriorating condition on a farm near Cowden. Conversion for use of the structure in its original location was simply not sustainable.

As well as input from English Heritage there were a number of planning complications including evidence of great crested newts in the pond next to the proposed site. Liaison with Kent County Council Biodiversity Projects Officer was necessary to plan for the future building work.

Agreement was reached to replace an existing prefabricated timber bungalow on the farm with the listed structure to create a replacement dwelling. The conversion allows a highly energy efficient house to be created and the design incorporates a full basement under the building increasing usable floor area and providing space for heat pump equipment.

We are looking forward to taking forward this unusual project.
